Lurgan v Limavady
Saturday, 1st December 2018
Saturday saw the return to league action after a mid-season break. The game proved to be a difficult encounter due mainly to sluggishness on Limavady’s part after the break and a very determined performance by their opponents, Lurgan. Lurgan have struggled this season so far however if they continue to perform as they did today they will soon get the required points to see them rise up the table.
Limavady welcomed back Darren Corrigan from injury after a lengthy period on the sidelines. This was however offset with the loss of Peter Wilson with a shoulder injury and hopefully he will return sooner rather than later. The first half turned out to be a dour affair with both packs cancelling each other out, so much so that the scoreline going into the last minute of the half (0.0) reflected more a football match that a rugby match. The only action of note came just before the referee would blow his whistle for half-time when ,skipper, Jody McMurray managed to force his way through the Lurgan rearguard to touch down near the posts. Jim McCartney duly added the extras to leave the half-time score at 0.7
The twenty minutes after the turnaround saw Limavady up the ante and they were rewarded with an excellent try. Johnny Lees carried the ball some thirty metres through the midfield before offloading to his backline resulting in Jim McCartney finishing off under the posts. He converted his own try to give Limavady some daylight. They further increased the lead ten minutes later when Darren Corrigan capped his return with a try when he forced his way over the try line. McCartney duly converted to stretch the score out to 0.19. Limavady should have been now looking for a fourth try to secure a bonus point win however this was not to be how it panned out. Lurgan finished the stronger with two tries from flanker Sam Longstaff and wing Ryan Mooney thus reducing the deficit to 12.19. At the end of proceedings Limavady welcomed the referee’s final whistle and four points in the bag.
Limavady are now in third place, one point behind Clogher Valley and Randalstown with a game in hand. Their next opponents are Lisburn who they entertain next Saturday. Hopefully today’s game has removed the rustiness and we will see an improved performance next week.
