George Tees Cup, 15-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT
Saturday 31st August 2013, Start Time;12.30pm
City of Derry Rugby Club will have one of their busiest days of the new season at Judges Road on Saturday when the main attraction will be the “UK City of Culture” George Tees Cup”. This competition if for Minor League Teams and it is a 15 aside Tournament contested by teams mainly from the North West of the Provence.
The George Tees Cup was won last year by Coleraine Rugby Club who thwarted a five year run of successes from the University of Ulster @ Coleraine. The competition this year will be keenly contested for, as the unique tag of “UK City of Culture” has attracted a bigger entry than usual.
It is hoped to make this Annual Completion a special occasion this year with the following Clubs confirmed to attend; Coleraine, Enniskillen, Innishowen, Letterkenny, Limavady, L’Derry YMCA, Omagh, Rainey OB, Strabane, University of Ulster @ Coleraine, Creggs from Co Roscommon and City of Derry Rugby Club. The action will start at 12.30pm with the final scheduled for 6pm.
Meanwhile City of Derry 1st XV travel to Ballynahinch on Saturday for their first competitive game of the season in the Ulster Senior League. The Hinch are the current league champions which they won last season by just four points from City of Derry. This fixture will make for the perfect challenge for both teams as they access their playing personnel with the first All Ireland Fixture to come on the last Saturday of September.
City of Derry will experiment with former Captain and back row player Stephen Corr packing down in the second row and this could become his new position for the season. Former Coleraine Captain Stephen Dickey will make his anticipated debut at open side wing forward to hopefully fill a problem position for the North West outfit over the last few years. The remainder of the team has a familiar look about it.
