The annual Ophir Rugby sevens tournament this year will be held over the weekend of the 16th/17th August at Magowan Park, The Cottonmount, Mallusk. On Friday evening an u17s tournament will take place commencing at 6.30pm and on Saturday the main tournament and an u19s tournament will take place commencing at 12noon.
This event has been held annually since 1974 as the traditional start of the Rugby season and attracts approx 8no clubs on Friday evening competing for the u17s title, 6no clubs on Saturday competing for the u19s Ken Bonar Memorial trophy along with approx 12no Clubs competing over the course of the afternoon for the title concluding at approx 5.30pm with the Mayor- representing the main event sponsor Newtownabbey Borough Council – presenting the winners with the Will Totten Memorial trophy.
This year, also, the event will mark the re-opening of the Ophir pitches after the completion of an extensive drainage/training lights upgrade scheme funded by BiffaAward, Newtownabbey Borough Council and Big Lottery.
As well as the guarantee of a great days Rugby we also provide childrens entertainment, face painting, bouncy castle, bbq, pig on a spit, laser clay pigeons and refreshments to make this a fabulous fun filled occassion for the entire family.
