Instonians Bit First
In Div 1 of the Ulster Rugby Championship all eyes were on the games involving Dromore and Instonians and Enniskillen and Ballyclare. Would it be a case of last seasons top two Instonians and Ballyclare dominating the league. At Barban Hill – Dromore 1st xv boosted by the presence of former Ulster prop Jonny Simpson took their opportunities to defeat an Instonians side that included John Andress and former Ulster scrum half Paul Marshall. Ballyclare picked up an important bonus point in their 23 – 13 win at Mullaghmeen over Enniskillen. Cooke secured a crucial win over Coleraine at Shaws bridge as they look for a strong start to their league campaign. The opening fixture in this league was played on Friday night at Gibson Park as newly promoted Grosvenor overcame a determined CIYMS side to win 36 – 27 outscoring their opponents by five tries to four. Despite Grosvenor building up an early 19 – 0 lead CI fought back to level the scores at 22 – 22.
The opening weekend of action in the Ulster rugby Premiership and the Ulster rugby Championship did not disappoint followers of Domestic rugby in Ulster. In Division 1 of the Premiership Ballynahinch made a statement by defeating current Stevenson Shield Holders City of Armagh at Ballymacarn Park. Malone and Banbridge could not be separated in their 18 -18 draw at Gibson Park. Spectators were treated to a nine try spectacle at the Dub with the students outscoring visitors Ballymena by five tries to four in their 33 – 26 win to make a statement of their intentions this season.
In Div 2 of the Premiership their were wins for Rainey OB over Omagh at the Thomas Mellon Playing Fields with City of Derry securing a morale boosting win over Bangor at the Craig Thompson stadium. Belfast Harlequins continued their winning streak by defeating Dungannon at Deramore Park.

In Div 2 Limavady did not disappoint in their opening game at the John Hunter Playing Fields scoring seven tries as they sweept aside Ards 48 -0. Nelisbrook in Randalstown was another venue where the home side were made to work hard for their 31 – 26 win against Academy with both sides expected to be in the promotion mix this season. Relegated Clogher Valley faced newly promoted Lurgan at the Cran as their forwards proved too strong in scoring three tries in their win over the County Armagh side.
This weekend the action moves to the 1st Round of the First Trust Senior Cup with four ties down for decision. First time winners City of Armagh open their defence at the Palace Grounds against Bangor with last years finalists Ballymena travelling to Stevenson Park to play Dungannon. These four sides lost their opening premiership matches last weekend and will all be seeking a win to build momentum going forward to the start of the All Ireland league. In the other two ties we have a Belfast Derby involving Malone and Belfast Harlequins at Gibson Park. At the Dub – Queens University play the first of back to back games with Banbridge in the Cup and league. Head coach Derek Suffern has been busy off season assembling a strong squad as the students look to challenge for promotion in Div 2A of the AIL.
Last weekend highlighted the difficulties faced by clubs playing at venues where the home town was hosting parades. Ards were the unlucky side having faced an early start to play their match at Limavady. It is something those organising fixtures should take into consideration when scheduling fixtures in the future.
Promoting Domestic rugby in Ulster has always been the goal of my preview. Now in my sixth season I have witnessed the dramatic increase in numbers following and taking an interest in Club rugby. Much of the progress has been built on the work done by clubs in building platforms using their websites and social media links to connect supporters and keep them informed and updated on what is happening at their local community rugby club. This week I went round the websites of the 32 clubs in the Premiership leagues and Div 1 and 2 of the Rugby Championship to see the progress being made. Sadly there are a small number of clubs who have little or no Digital presence. I am told it is difficult to get volunteers to undertake these Digital roles in their clubs. We now have over 100.000 followers of Domestic Rugby in the province. Banbridge and Ballynahinch on their own have over 10.000 followers. Talking to Marc Eadie at Banbridge – They find that their sponsors love having their names out their on the clubs social media links. Their Digital platform is also essential for supporters who are unable to attend matches to keep in touch with match updates. Despite the work they are doing they are striving to keep improving their service to their supporters and the wider community in the Banbridge area.
Several examples of clubs catching my attention with their Digital platforms are Omagh, City of Derry, Instonians, Limavady, Portadown, City of Armagh, Ballymoney and Bangor. The recently launched facebook pages of City of Derry and Limavady are worth viewing.
To help me with my preview I would like to see clubs publishing their team lists and match reports. There is appetite out in the rugby community for detail. Many supporters who previously focused on their own clubs are interested in what is happening in the wider Domestic rugby Community.
The WhatsApp results group set up by Crawford McConkey has been a resounding success.
From this season I will be sending a copy of the preview to each of the club secretaries for distribution to their membership. I have also established a list of PROs and club volunteers who manage club websites and Digital platforms that will be included in my mailing list. I am grateful to the number of clubs who publish the preview on their club websites including their facebook pages. Your support is very much appreciated. Please include me in your mailing list of team selections and match reports.
