The Ulster Society of Rugby Football Referees is tackling a vitally important issue – childhood cancer – and we will be holding collections for Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children at 60 games in one day this February.
Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) is a charity which offers practical and emotional support to children and young people with cancer and their families. Every week in Northern Ireland three children, teenagers or young people are diagnosed with cancer. A cancer diagnosis shatters family life; NICFC aims to rebuild this by offering practical and emotional support.
Fundraising is more important to the charity now more than ever as it embarks on building its £3m state-of-the-art therapeutic and respite centre in Newcastle, Co. Down, which will provide nurturing short breaks for children with cancer and their families. No donation is too small and the refs are appealing to people to show their support and turn their money into something magical.
President of The Ulster Society of Rugby Football Referees, Marshall Kilgore, said the collections on February 23rd will kick-start their fundraising for the charity in 2013.
Marshall said: “We are encouraging people to give as much or as little as they can to help this great cause. Sadly childhood cancer is something that is becoming more and more prevalent in this country. Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children is a charity the refs and I have taken to our hearts and we will put 100 per cent into this fundraising drive.”
Fiona McGhee, General Manager of local chain Winemark, sponsors of USRFR and charity supporters of Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, said Winemark is delighted to be involved with the charity and commended the referees for their colossal efforts for such a great cause.
Those who cannot donate at any of the fixtures can log onto the Referee’s Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/UlsterRefs to donate what they can.
