Fox’s Field at Campbell College was in beautiful condition for the two
pre-season friendlies for the Ulster Schools and Club sides on Monday.

Ireland had trained at the same venue earlier in the morning in
torrential rain, and despite 2.5 hours of abuse the pitch was in
perfect nick for the first kick-off at 1.30pm.

The Schools team are a useful outfit with a number of players starting
the second season at the top flight of schools rugby in the province.

The Ulster v Yorkshire game started brightly with Ulster scoring twice early on from quick ball set up from the pack.

A third from winger Glenn Baillie was impressive as the young Ulsterman managed to evade three attempts to tackle him before he made the corner. Yorkshire did manage to run in a couple of tries in the second half, but in the end it was a solid performance from the Ulster boys.

The second game Ulster v Lancashire was a bit one sided. Lancashire were an experienced quality side with some strong runners in their backline who loved nothing more than to counter-attack at every opportunity.

Unfortunately for Ulster they proved very successful and ran in a
number of scores. Despite shipping a heavy defeat the home side never
gave up and it was encouraging to see they keep trying right to the
the final whistle.
