Virginia RFC U12s travelled to Kells for a though local derby.
Virginia RFC U12s travelled to Kells last Sunday for a challenge match v North Meath. In what has always been a close encounter the visitors repelled early pressure with the backs putting in some fierce tackling, especially Finn Lotscher, Cian Doughty and Aaron Kierans. The forwards then earned some great field position from ferocious rucking, and a powerful drive from new hooker Rioghan Smith put Virginia in the lead. The forwards by now were driving over at every opportunity, led by Sorcha Higgins, Ronan McKeown, and Michael Mckeon-Boyle. This pressure was again rewarded when Evan Charters charged over to double the lead. A break away try from the hosts meant that Virginia led 2-1 at the break.

Both teams emptied the bench at half time but Virginia forwards continued to impress, with strong work by Rebecca Snell, Robert Lochaden, Niall Branagan and Ibykan Ajetummobi allowing Cai Walker to set off on a mazy run to score in the corner and re-establish a two try lead. The hosts were determined to not let the match go and soon pulled another try back. Virginia didn’t panic though, and after again setting up a strong attacking position they sealed the victory after a darting run and great pass by Scrum Half Jason Henderson set up Amanda McQuade to score in the corner.
