Malone defeated rivals Ballynahinch in the Quarter Final game in the Ulster Senior Cup by 17-13
Malone welcomed old rivals Ballynahinch to Gibson Park to contest the Quarter Final of the Ulster Senior Cup.
There wasn’t going to be much in this game as the final result showed with Malone wining by 17-13.
Malone outscored the visitor by three tries to one, both sides played physical and expansive rugby but Malone did show dominance in the scrum. Both back line moved the ball well but again it was Malone who made the best use of their possession crossing the Ballynahinch line on three occasions.
The fist half saw Ballynahinch exert early pressure which the Malone defence had to soak up, it was the visitors who opened the scoring on 28 minutes when they kicked a penalty to give them a 0-3 lead.
On 33 minutes Malone scored their opening try when Hinch were penalised at the scrum, Kelly took a quick tap and go, the ball was moved wide through Creighton, Gribben made an excellent break, made a superb off load to the wing who also made a superb inside pass to Taylor Acheson who ran in the corner for the first Malone score, Gribben taking over the kicking duties narrowly missed the conversion.
There were no further scores in the opening half which finished Malone ahead by 5-3
Four minutes into the second half winger Chris Leathem got Malone’s second try, after a superb of forward power by the Malone pack, the back line moved the ball through a number of phases and leathem was on hand to power his way over the line to score an unconverted try in the corner. Malone ahead by 10-3.
On 56 minutes Malone scored their third try of the game when again after some superb play by both the forwards and the backs Taylor Acheson handed off the Hinch winger and stepped inside the Hinch full back to score his second of the game, John Creighton added the conversion to give Malone a 17-3 lead.
The visitors scored a second penalty on 58 minutes and a good well taken try on 68 minutes to narrow the deficit to 4 points, despite the visitors pressing hard in the final 10 minutes of the game, the home side dug deep and defended well to deny the attempted comeback from Ballynahinch.
The game finished Malone wining by 17-13.
