Ballyshannon 10 Sligo 2nd XV 13
Ballyshannon senior team had a useful run out today in their first game of the season when they took on Sligo 2’s at the Lakeside Centre.
A new look Ballyshannon side seen a host of new faces with three players making their rugby debuts, th…
e Gillespie brothers Darren and Dominic and Bundoran man Tom Connolly who all acquitted themselves brilliantly.
Also this year we have unearthed two gems in Dubliner Darragh Tyrell who had a man of the match performance at no. 8 and Alan Prendergast from Bundoran who also put in a very impressive performance at hooker.
Sligo opened the scoring and went into an 8~0 lead but Prendergast reduced their lead when he went over after a great steal in the lineout by Tyrell who shortly afterwards put his team into a 10~8 lead after some great work by the pack.
However it was Sligo that sealed the win when they nipped in for a controversial game winning score when a foot in touch was missed by the touch judge ( from ballyshannon, we will mention no names) and secured a 13~10 win.
Coach Raymond Gallagher will be very pleased with his sides opening game and the fact that 17 players got a game and considering the fact the home side were still missing quite a number of players things look encouraging for the new season!!
Saturday’s team was :
John Gallagher, David Hoey, Brian Killalea, Darren Gillespie, Clinton Morrow, Richard Gallagher, Alan Prendergast, Darragh Tyrell, Shane Roper, Dominic Gillespie, Eoin Halliday, Mark Rooney, Thomas Dillon, Joe Gallagher and Paul Connolly. Subs Ray Gallagher, John Mc Intyre
Ballyshannon Ladies 32 Carrick On Shannon Ladies 0
Ballyshannon ladies rugby had a very impressive first outing on Saturday when they took on Carrick On Shannon at the Lakeside in their openong game of the season. The ladies team has lost a few very influential players over the last two seasons fro various reasons but you would never have thought it as they put in a commanding performance with some serious hits being put in all the park.
After some excellent ball handling and good rucking Ballyshannon probed the holes in the Carrick defence and scored some great tries through Siobhan Coughlin (2), Anna Rafferty (2), Mairead Carty and Janet Kerr. Siobhan Coughlin added one conversion to cap a man of the match performance in what was an excellent team effort.
