Last week Enniskillen Community Rugby Officer Rob Watson ran his final major rugby event of the season. Primary schools from across Fermanagh were invited to take part in the Fermanagh Spring Tag rugby Extravaganza. In all 15 Primary schools took part, each school having at least 2 teams, 1 boys and 1 girls’ team, and some having 3 teams. A total of 33 teams and 400 plus, boys and girls took part. Tag Rugby is a simplified non-contact version of rugby where boys and girls can play together in the same game without the thought of getting tackled. Tag Rugby is all about basic skills such as passing, catching, hand eye co-ordination, running, balance and evasion. The IRFU promote an ethos of non-competitive games at this age level with participation, fun and friendship.
The Girls and Boys games were run on separately on different pitches with each team playing a total of four games of 10 minutes, which was more than enough time to show off their skills learnt over the previous weeks. From the start play was a bit rusty however by the second round of games play had improved and continued to improve throughout the morning showing of some great skills used in scoring plenty of tries.
The standard of this annual Extravaganza is improving year on year. This is mainly due to the increased interest from schools, the children and also their parents, who see tag rugby as a great way of improving and developing the children’s sporting skills which can transferred across a broad range of sports.

I would also like to thank the children for participating and entering into the spirit of tag rugby, I would like to encourage these children and their friends to come along to Enniskillen Rugby Club grounds on Saturday mornings for mini rugby coaching.
Enniskillen Rugby Club will be running new exciting free coaching sessions, aimed solely at girls. I encourage and welcome all girls in Primary 6 and 7, to attend this free 4 week programme, starting Saturday 7 April, 9.30am – 10.30am. These sessions are based on tag rugby, with the view of the girls attending the IRFU Tag Rugby Competition at Ashbourne RFC.
