Wednesday night saw the final first round match take place of this year’s Nutty Krust Floodlit tournament at Chambers Park This involved the teams from Ballymena and Rainey old Boys. CLICK HERE FOR ACTION SHOTS!
Ballymena with a much changed side due to six late cry offs kicked off the proceedings and found themselves up against a well drilled and organised Rainey team. Rainey had a chance to open the score after 2 minutes with a penalty but the place kick by Martin Connolly went wide. The opening score came after 5 minutes with a score from Raineys no 6 Matthew McCullough, which was converted by Martin Connolly. Rainey had a further chance to extend the lead with a penalty attempt but this went wide. Rainey’s no 3 Tommy O’Hagan who was impressive at reclaiming the ball from the restarts made several good breaks and a further score came after 8 minutes through no 5 Michael Holgate under the posts. The extra points were added , 14-0 to Rainey. Ballymena found it hard to get out of their own half and a line break from Raineys no 12 Rory Coleman led to a further score and conversion. The next score for Rainey came from a break from the lineout by Matthew McCullough , who set up Michael Holgate to score his second try of the game, again the extra points were added. A further penalty was added on 30 mins by Martin Connolly to make the half time score 31 – 0 to Rainey.
Rainey continued on were they had left off in the first half and another good break by no 12 Rory Coleman saw a further score which was converted by Martin Connolly (39 mins). Rory Coleman made it a hat trick off trys on 44mins with Martin Connolly adding the extra points, 45-0 to Rainey . Two Further Penalties by Martin Connolly, increased the lead for Rainey. Rory Coleman ended the scoring on 65 mins with another fine run and the extra points were added by Martin Connolly. Final score Rainey 58 Ballymena 0.
Man Of The Match award went to Raineys no 9 Andrew Donaghy.
The draw for the Quarter Finals was made after the game by Ulster prop Paddy McAllister and Ulster Elite Development Officer Niall Malone .
