Quins II 10-7 Malone II
Quins secure a win in a tight, but entertaining match.

On an afternoon with difficult conditions, Quins secured a welcome win with a much improved performance from when these two teams first met back in August.
Malone went 0-7 up with a converted try ten minutes from half time, and there was no further scores before half time.

Quins rallied in the 2nd half with good work by the forwards providing plenty of ball for the slick backs. At 50min David Creighton started a move mid field and just inside the Malone half, quick hands by Owen McMurray released Mark Roberts, who made the most of the space and scored in the right corner. James Shiels was successful with a difficult touchline conversion, 7-7.

Quins continued with persistent raids into the Malone half, winning several penalties. James Shiels missed the posts with a few penalty attempts, but at 65min he finally was successful, 10-7. Quins held out with some strong defence in the second half to leave the score 10-7 to Quins.

An overcast morning in belfast kept the personalities in check in changing room 2 as the 3rdXV tried to crawl out of an early season rut which amounted to one win in the opening 4! And crawl they did, 14 men trying to cling on to kennys coat tails off the back of every scrum! Wayne used a mixture of skill and experience to win the toss and the wiley cat chose to play with the breeze in the first half, minutes later he gracefully received cabbages opening kick off! Playing corners was the order of the day and despite good handling it took ten minutes for PK to fall over the line in the right hand corner converted by the cab man from distance! Quins second try was almost a carbon copy of the first again converted by Cabizle followed by a three pointer and then sonny bill kiester scored off a switch breaking between 1 and 10 tackles on his way to the line depending who you hear it from! At the end of the first period the harlequins led Dee 24-0!

The second half was much less eventful it consisted of one penalty from cabbage and a seven pointer which was in touch from
Donaghadee all in between kenny running at an anxious lookin donaghadee first 5/8 amounts of scrums!

Good day for the threes and desperately needed win, special mentions to Ben Usain and Charlie in the line outs, Ross in the scrum and basically everywhere else! Storey won all of the restarts but even monty could have done that with cabbage landing them on a tupence all day! We all hope that johnny had a pleasant day as his involvement in the rugby consisted of standing offside and waving at the referee or trying to perform his party trick of catching a ball with the tips of his fingers which in fact didn’t actually work!

Larne 3XV 0 – 41 Quins 4XV
Solid Win for 4’s in Larne

The County Antrim village of Glynn was the venue for this week’s game against a Larne side that had already won three and lost three league games so it was a pretty difficult one to call prior to kick off. The sheer ferocity and intensity of the Quins play in the first 20 minutes however allayed any doubts that the supporters may have had with a flurry of forward and backline play that would have graced any TV screen.

Within three minutes AJ scuttled over in the right hand corner after being put clear by a lovely basic pass from Tim Elliott. The conversion missed left the score 0-5 but within two minutes of the restart and, after a Larne forward was adjudged to be offside at a ruck in the Larne 22, Scotty slotted home a casual penalty in front of the posts to make in 0-8. The points tally rose further when the Turk, making a welcome return to the team, slithered over after some great inter-play between himself and big Johnny and with Scotty kicking the conversion the score line read 0-15 with only 15 minutes gone. The pressure on the Larne line continued when after some devastating breaks by Matt at centre and Tim coming in from full back, Matty collected another great pass from Tim to go over, this time in the left hand corner. Scotty duly converted to make it 0-22. The first half continued in the same vein and on 30 minutes the forwards pressure at the breakdown once again told setting up a lovely platform for Gareth Watson to split the Larne defence to go over under the posts. Scotty converted again to make it 0-29 and with only two minutes of the half remaining new boy Matt in the centre who had produced some very direct early breaks was rewarded for his efforts when he crossed for his first try of the year. The conversion made it 0-36 at half time.

The second half proved to be a little less relentless with only one try coming from it and it seemed that the intensity and speed of the first 40 minutes caught up with both teams. It didn’t help matters that scrums had to go uncontested after birthday boy Kieron Deighan (28 year old apparently- hard paper round son!!) left the field with an injured rib meaning AJ moved to flanker with Kevin Fogarty entering the fray on the right wing were he put in a very solid 20 minutes. In fairness to Larne they battled well all day but just seemed unable to get any real momentum going, their only real chance of a try ending up with their centre just being held up short of the line by some really gritty Quins defenders.

The most ridiculous moment of the day came when Turk took a quick penalty headed for the line untouched only to somehow spill the ball and suffer the indignation of being the first recipient of the “Toilet Brush” award after the match. Apart from that he had a great game and linked really well with Johnny at No 8. There were several great opportunities for more points from a really well balanced Quins backline however thanks to some very determined Larne defence and some poor final passes all Quins had to show from the second period was a very well executed try after a great break by Matty and some silky handling by the Fog and Tim to see AJ cross again. The conversion was missed to leave the final score 0-41 to the visitors.

All in all a very good day out by the seaside with the most notable thing being the sheer intensity of the forwards, especially in the first twenty minutes providing a really strong platform for the backs to work some clever moves. They were relentless at the breakdown and were particularly formidable in the scrum with the back row performing extremely well in both defence and attack. Johnny made a lot of ground and along with Fergal, tackled ferociously, as did the returning Paul Gardiner who put in another tremendous performance of grit and determination. The front-row was solid with Harry and Pete in the second row working well in their first ever outing as a couple.

The backs ran some great lines and again defended with a level of determination that just wasn’t evident week in week out last season. While the forwards played their best game to date the man-of-the-match goes to Tim Elliott for his sheer control, ability to run great lines and completion of two basic passes that resulted in a try each time.

Next week a home fixture against Civil Service which is also “bring a supporter to Deramore Day”. (Unfortunately all seated tickets have been sold).
