Ulster, Ireland and British Lion, Stephen Ferris is keen to promote Mini & Youth Rugby at Bangor and has assisted in the summer recruitment poster campaign. Bangor Rugby Club Chairman Jonny Watson said “We are delighted to have the support of such a great rugby player as Stephen. His involvement will hopefully encourage some of our young players to strive to greater things. This is an important year for Stephen In the build up to the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Having spent the last 6 months recovering from a knee injury suffered in the Heineken Cup game at Ravenhill in January we would like to wish Stephen all the best with the rest of the build-up and to the RWC. We will keep him informed of our results while he is away Down Under.”

Stephen Ferris added “Mini & Youth Rugby is very important to the future of School, Club and Provincial Rugby in Ulster. I came through the Youth Ranks at Ulster & Ireland and know the importance of having a structured coaching regime in place from an early age. I was delighted to be asked to be the Mini & Youth Ambassador at Bangor Rugby Club. Not only do I want to encourage kids to play at Bangor but throughout clubs in Ulster.”
The Mini and Maxi teams at Bangor Rugby Club cover the U-7 to U-12 range (first form of secondary school), and are organised into school year groups (P4, P5, P6 etc). The Youth teams split into groups at U-17, U-15 and U-13 age grade levels. In recent seasons, the Club has been able to field Youth teams at all three levels and aims to do so again this season.

Youth rugby is a developing section within the club and Stephen’s support is a very welcome endorsement of this important group of players as it helps to provide new home-grown talent for the club’s senior ranks.

Formal pre-season training commenced on Wednesday 3rd August 2011 and will continue for the rest of the Summer each Wednesday evening at 7pm and on Sundays at midday. The sessions last approximately 1½ hours and are structured so as to cater for all abilities with a view to encouraging the attendance of both experienced players and those playing the game for the first time.

New members in all sections of the club are always welcome. Please visit the club’s website www.bangorrfc.co.uk to get in touch or to find out more.

Pre-season training has reached its highest level for over 20 years.

With over 50 players turning out for training last Thursday, this marks a high point in terms of support for the coaching staff, commitment to personal development, and preparation for the coming season.

In the words our our Recruitment Officer, Danny Curran, “There’s a lot of players still to join us so if we can get that number up to 60 I’ll be happy.”

Let’s train Danny happy.
