This May Day bank holiday weekend, Friday 29th April to Monday 2nd May, Carrickfergus will become Rugby Country as Northern Ireland’s premier sevens rugby tournament, the GUINNESS® Carrick Sevens returns.
Started in 1973, this will be 39th year of the tournament at Carrickfergus Rugby Club. The competition has grown to attract more than 50 teams from around the world. Countries represented this year include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Fiji, France, Spain, England and Scotland. The total prize fund for the tournament is £5,600.
Organiser Jim Simms, said: “The Guinness Carrick Sevens tournament has become one of the key highlights on the Northern Ireland rugby calendar. We are delighted to again be welcoming men and women from around the world to Carrickfergus to compete against some of our best local players.”
The tournament begins on Friday 29th April with the under 19 competition. On Saturday 30th April, 24 sides will take to the field to try and win the Guinness Open. On Sunday, the best of the All Ireland League will compete to see who will win the Premier Sevens Section. The coveted Ladies Tens competition also runs on Sunday 1st May.
The packed on-field activity is supported by a programme of night-time entertainment off the pitch, with local DJ’s performing inside the Guinness marquee. One of Northern Ireland’s finest cover bands, Rio will play on the Saturday night, with top recording group, The Untouchables headlining on Sunday.
