{"id":267,"date":"2014-05-19T13:06:47","date_gmt":"2014-05-19T13:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intouchrugby.com\/connacht\/?p=267"},"modified":"2014-06-02T20:46:44","modified_gmt":"2014-06-02T20:46:44","slug":"irb-reaffirms-commitment-womens-rugby-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intouchrugby.com\/connacht\/irb-reaffirms-commitment-womens-rugby-world-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"IRB Reaffirms Commitment to Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/intouchrugby.com\/connacht\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/world-rugby.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-268\" src=\"http:\/\/intouchrugby.com\/connacht\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/world-rugby.jpg\" alt=\"world rugby\" width=\"640\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intouchrugby.com\/connacht\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/world-rugby.jpg 640w, https:\/\/intouchrugby.com\/connacht\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/world-rugby-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"581\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"5\" valign=\"top\" width=\"581\"><span class=\"text_newshead\"><span class=\"text_newshead\">IRB Reaffirms Commitment to Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The International Rugby Board has reaffirmed its commitment to growing the Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup brand with the approval of a three-point plan to ensure the flagship event continues to grow and inspire the next generation of female players.<\/p>\n<p>The approval of the plan by the IRB Council follows an extensive strategic review of Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup by tournament owners Rugby World Cup Limited.<\/p>\n<p>Key review considerations included tournament timing within the international Women&#8217;s Rugby calendar, the tournament delivery model, tournament format and the global qualification criteria with the objective of further boosting competition standards, global profile and fan engagement.<\/p>\n<p>The following recommendations were agreed by Council:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup to move to every four years from 2017 to optimise the international competition calendar and enable the world&#8217;s top players to compete in the pinnacle Fifteens and Sevens events&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup to be capped at 12 teams to ensure the highest competition standards&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The global qualification process to be streamlined to ensure the participation of the world&#8217;s best teams on the world&#8217;s biggest stage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The announcement comes at an exciting time for the sport with Women&#8217;s Rugby enjoying unprecedented growth and profile, Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup set for a record-breaking France 2014 event, the IRB Women&#8217;s Sevens Series going from strength to strength and Women&#8217;s Sevens set to debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>RWCL Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: &#8220;Women&#8217;s Rugby is one of the world&#8217;s fastest growing team sports with an unprecedented 1.5 million women and girls participating across every continent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the forefront of the phenomenal growth are our flagship women&#8217;s Fifteens and Sevens events and we are committed to ensuring that Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup is cemented as one of the prestige properties in women&#8217;s sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Details of the qualification process and tender process for Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup 2017 and 2021 will be announced in due course.<\/p>\n<p>IRB Rugby Committee member Cheryl Soon said: &#8220;The Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup is a fantastic event and today&#8217;s announcement is great news for the Game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a long-term commitment to the Women&#8217;s Game, which is growing at a record speed. To enhance that, we need to support the development of the Game and get the schedule right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will allow the top players compete in the Olympics, the Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup and then the Rugby World Cup Sevens, if they choose to.
