CREGGS RUGBY 39 V OLBC RFC 10
CREGGS FIRST XV continued their current good form with a 39 to 10 league win against O L B C on Sunday last, at the SPORTS GROUNDS. Coming off three league wins in a row Creggs started nervously, getting into good attacking areas but a combination of bad decision making and poor handling kept letting the opposition off the hook . Creggs were looking the better team but conceded a soft offensive penalty in the 23rd minute and from the ensuing lineout on their 22 they were marched to their own line and after conceding another penalty O L B C got over in the corner but failed with the convert. Creggs responded with concerted pressure and in the 35th minute won a penalty 10 m out on the right which resulted in a yellow card. A quick tap and go ended with Tom Fleming forcing his way over leaving the score tied 5 all at half time.
Creggs came out with fire in the belly in the second half and with The introduction of Peter Lohan and Ger Heneghen lifted the tempo and where rewarded in the 41st minute after good approach work from Lohan and Shane Dowd, resulting in a Kevin Brandon off load to Barney Kilcommons who forced his way to the line for a try. Shortly afterwards more strong pressure resulted in Sean Og Higgins crossing for the third try. From the kick off Creggs moved the ball down the right and a quick switch left put Heneghan into space and he finished in style. Five minutes later good support play ended with Fleming running a terrific line onto a Tom Callaghan pass before transferring to Heneghan who displayed good footwork in getting over. On 52 minutes from a ruck on the 5 m line impressive scrum half Andrew Callaghan with a smart show and go darted over, with Dowd adding the points. With 10 minutes remaining, good Creggs line speed forced a defensive knock on `and the alert Heneghan hacked through and made the touch down. Three minutes later, poor tackling allowed O L B C in for a consolation try, but Creggs had the final word. A loose defensive kick was picked up by captain Tom Callaghan who initiated a passing movement, resulting in Heneghan completing his hat trick and also scoring the conversion making it a very successful return to the Creggs colors for Ger. In all, It was another great squad performance. This result leaves Creggs one point behind table toppers Tuam and looking forward to a home game to Ballyhaunis next Saturday night with a 7 30pm ko.
