Connacht League Final, Castlebar v Buccaneers match report:
Castlebar Ladies Rugby Team ended 2014 with a second Connacht League Title in a row at Ballyhaunis RFC on Sunday December 7th. Their opponents, Buccaneers of Athlone, were the only team to have beaten Castlebar on their journey to the league final. This game was a fantastic demonstration of rugby from both sides and ended with Castlebar coming out on top with a score of 19 points to 8.
The game started off with a Castlebar kick off into Buccaneers and it seemed that title holders Castlebar were the more nervous side, giving away 3 penalties in as many minutes. Buccaneers had complete control of the game for the first ten minutes but this wasn’t rewarded on the score board. Castlebar were dealt a huge blow in these first ten minutes of immense Buccaneers pressure when hooker Fiona nic Ruairí was forced to the side-line with a leg injury. She was replaced by Caroline Brennan who slotted well into the front row with Marcella Derrig and Kiara Irwin, both of whom took over hooking and throwing duties.
