The Sorrentinos are committed to producing top quality Southern Italian gastronomy, to the use of authentic ingredients, and to keeping the tradition of Italian culture, and hospitality, vibrant and passionate. Chef Vito Gnazzo, formerly of three Michelin-starred restaurant Antica Osteria del Ponte and world-renowned REX il Ristorante in Los Angeles, is known for his “farm to table” approach to Southern Italian dining, something that attracts locals and visitors alike to Mozzarella & Vino and its sister restaurants Il Gattopardo and The Leopard at des Artistes.

I am Adrienne Daly, Personal Development based Nutrition Coach and Personal trainer and figure competitor. Houston, Texas.

I am a retired nurse. I have re-invented my profession into being a Personal Development based Nutrition Coach and a “body changing” personal trainer.

I am positively transforming my clients lives through;

-Paleo based Nutrition.

-Self discovery through aligning goals with highest core values.

-Body image and self image.

I have a background in nursing. I am also a Master Pilates Instructor and past teacher trainer and certifier. That, along with my obsession with “food as the fountain of youth”, has driven me into the arms of the Personal Development space. Here I dive into the “WHY” of why we do the things we do that keep us trapped and unsatisfied, to figure out the ‘HOW” of how to find meaning and satisfaction in life.

For me, food was the portal to self actualization. My food choices changed, my body started to change and then my mind started to change! Simple taking out certain foods(mostly processed) and adding in others(whole foods, veggies and fruits), I felt a shift mentally and hormonally. This made me think clearer, make wiser decisions, and realize the things that were sucking the life out of me… AND STOP DOING THEM.

I work with men and women in their 40’s to:

-Eat better.

-Sleep better.

-Have more energy.

-Lose weight.

-Relate better to others.

-Develop new, GOOD habits.

-Develop new rituals that help with STRESS management.

-Develop both positive self image and body image.

Basically with anything that keeps you from living the life you desire.

Resolve to beat joint pain this year

January’s combination of chilly weather and New Year’s fitness resolutions may leave many Brits struggling with aching and painful joints – far from an ideal way to start 2018. So this year, why not take steps to look after your joints and avoid joint pain putting you off your stride;

Are your joints ready?

Natural power: If you experience joint pain, you can try a clinically backed joint care supplement. A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that GOPO® – an active compound derived from rosehips with powerful natural anti-inflammatory properties- can improve joint pain and mobility in healthy, physically active adults. It’s also been shown to significantly reduce joint pain in sufferers of arthritis.

Plan ahead: Do your research and have a clear training strategy for your new regime as doing too much too soon, or overexerting yourself beyond your limits, is more likely to see you struggling with injury. Remember the importance of rest days in helping your body recover from training sessions, and ensure you build up your fitness gradually.

Start as you mean to go on: A thorough and proper warm up targeting all the major joints is important before any exercise. Dynamic stretches and an active warm up (rather than simply stretching cold muscles) helps blood flow to the muscles supporting the joints and aids synovial fluid flow, which in turn helps to reduce friction. Make sure you also cool down properly to help recovery.

Pay attention: Don’t ignore injuries and hope they will simply disappear; this may cause permanent issues long term. Seek professional help for injuries to give your body the best care possible. It may also be beneficial to visit your doctor for a once over before you begin your new fitness regime to ensure you’re fully ready to go.

New Year’s Goals + Resolutions: Mistakes To Avoid + Be Successful

Most people look at the beginning of the year as a chance to change their lives,
However, I have seen that at least 50% of those who establish New Year’s Resolutions or Big Goals for the New Year fail.

Reasons are that people are putting so much pressure on themselves to make New Year’s Resolutions or believe their lives will change at the stroke of midnight. Such extreme pressure sets your up for failing. Most people are in a fog from the holidays on January 1st that they don’t even think about starting because they are tired or stressed.

For example, I had a client who for a couple years in a row said he was going to stop smoking for the New Year. He never did because he really felt pressure and in his heart really did not want to stop. This is so common to make such grand choices because people feel they are expected to make choices such as losing weight, stop smoking or other
habits that they really don’t think about much the rest of the year.

How you can increase the likelihood of keeping a resolution or a new habit?

Whether is a New Year’s Resolution or just setting goals, people are more likely to success if they just take the time at the end of the year or when they are goal-setting to reflect. People should reflect on the past year or recent months to get a baseline or reference point on what they have been doing with their life and where they are at right now.

Asking ‘heart-felt” questions are the key.

You must reflect before you make your choices.
1. Write down what you have done this last year.

Do these for different areas of your life such as work, relationships and self (self-care).

2. Ask yourself: What is missing in my life?

What have I not done yet?

3. Ask Yourself: What would I most like to have in my life right now?

Image or picture what you most want in your life.
How would I feel in the next few years if I have not pursued my dreams and goals?

Don’t be upset if you have negative thoughts or reactions, let ‘inspirational dissatisfaction’ motivate you.

The likelihood of making goals and developing a new habit are based on the questions what must be asked before goal setting. If you do not take the time to ask yourself these questions you are just shooting arrows in the dark at a target.

4. Goals:

After these questions than you are ready to make 2 to 4 goals.

Keep these tips in mind when you make your goals. To begin building new habits that support your goals or just wanting to make a change inhabits I suggest:

1. Start with small gradual moves or steps.

For example. if you want a new career or skills don’t quit your job to go back full-time to school, take one course for a start and see if you like it. Break the goal down to tangible parts.

2. Break free of excuses

What may sound as valid reason for not working on your goals and new habits are really ‘agony anchors’ that hold you back. These are feelings of fear of change.

I hear from clients that they are ‘too busy’, ‘I had no time this week’ and other self-pity statements. This is never empowering. I have clients get a calendar or put in the cell phone calendar the day or evening they will work on their new goals and habits.

Example: If it is to go to the gym, schedule it in your calendar. Pre-plan and make this appointment with yourself. I am amazed how crowded my gym is in January and have many people stop going by Feb, because they have allowed many ‘distractions” in their lives. Yes, things pop-up. If and when they do, immediately re-schedule your calendar when you will attend.

3. Don’t share your goals or some of them with people who will act critical. Only tell those who will encourage and support you.

To become happier and more confident — avoid emotional vampires. Unhappy people allow “emotional vampires” to suck their positive feelings right out of their skulls. Emotional vampires include people who put you down, criticize or mock you, or sabotage your dreams and aspirations. Never let snipers or negative people shoot holes in your boat. These types of people drain the life out of you.

Take survey of your life by making a list of people and situations you expose yourself to. Then, discard or limit people, habits or situations that keep you from feeling optimistic and happy. In other words, ‘burn your bridges’ if needed.

Example: I had a young client in her early 30’s who wanted to train to run a half-marathon. She was very excited. She told her mother what she was planning to do and her mother looked at her and said, “you can’t do that…” She was upset and learned very quickly this principal of enlisting those who are only positive and supportive.

Follow these tips and you will not only be successful in the New Year, you will feel happier and optimistic.

Abs Of Steel At 55?

How CEO Angela Middleton Turned Back The Clock

Angela Middleton, CEO of MiddletonMurray, always enjoyed exercising to stay healthy. She found it relatively easy to stay in moderate shape, a healthy size 8, throughout her 30’s and 40’s. However, after turning 50 she began to see a hormonal weight gain that she couldn’t seem to shimmy away.

“For a while, I had been searching for a way to get rid of the excess weight that had crept up on me over the last three or four years,” she explains.

Her typical exercise routine was not cutting it anymore. Angela watched as her son, who had recently joined an Ultimate Performance location, began to change the way he ate and exercised. After seeing his physical progress Angela was inspired to try Ultimate Performance for herself. So she began her journey with trainer Harry, which she admits she was scared at the beginning…

“For me, it was really scary. I tend to be confident and walk in anywhere, do presentations in front of hundreds of people and not be phased by it, but I walked in here, and my initial impression was that it’s all great big muscly guys lifting heavy weights and I just felt really small and inadequate and pathetic.”

Angela, like a lot of other women, was in a mindset that her fitness goals might be impossible at her age. Successful in her career, Angela hadn’t been as successful with her exercise goals and began to think age and weight gain was something she had to resign to. Angela had never been introduced to heavy weight training, even though she previously trained with a celebrity trainer. She had always used lighter weights, unaware of the effects strength training could provide. At Ultimate Performance Angela was introduced to strength training where she saw if done correctly and consistently would create results she was yearning for. Angela quickly became hooked.

Angela not only changed the way she exercised but she also listened to nutrition advice from her trainer. Eliminating the unnecessary from her diet and only eating a well-designed balance of protein, vegetables and healthy fats. Angela only consumed food that was optimal for her body composition. Part of the UP process is becoming more intuitive about how food makes you feel – and which foods make you energised and productive throughout the day. It’s not just her body that has been transformed by her diet – Angela says it has had a positive benefit on her role as CEO of a large business. Her son now lives in the US and she plans to stop by UP Fitness in Los Angeles for a visit.

Angela feels like she has a new lease on life. She explains that taking on a new challenge and learning a new discipline was a timely reminder that you can progress and develop, whatever your age or experience. To book an UP consultation and begin your own transformation you can email UP Fitness here: https://upfitness.com/en/locations/los-angeles

Pro Plus reveals the costs and components of the ultimate student night out

As January’s student loan payment lands, Pro Plus unveils how the nation’s students are

partying hard, but could be making their money go further to ‘Live Like A Pro’

The average spend for a student night out is a budget-busting £28.84, with guys spending on average 13.5% more than girls. This is equivalent to almost a quarter of the average weekly student rent costs1
Student’s define a supercharged night – otherwise known as ‘going out out’ – as involving buying a new outfit especially for the occasion (26%), wearing heels (21%) and attending a pre-drinks gathering with a large group of people (72%), complete with drinking games (24%)
Guys voted that pulling was a priority – almost 50% more than voted by girls (47%)
Snapping selfies all night long is a key factor for a top night for almost a quarter (22%) of students

New research released today from student staple, Pro Plus has uncovered exactly what a night ‘out out’ looks like for the nation’s university students. New findings reveal that the average student spends £28.84 per night out, with guys splashing the cash 13.5% more than girls and one in 10 (8%) not setting a budget at all. Yet as January’s student loan instalment is soon to land, there are many ways students could preserve the pounds to supercharge their social life.

According to students, the ultimate night out is defined by buying an outfit especially for the occasion (26%) and wearing heels (21%). Attending a pre-drinks gathering with a large group of people (72%), complete with drinking games (24%), were also key factors, along with snapping selfies all night long (22%).

As one would expect, clubs (53%), bars (49%) and house parties (45%) were the top destinations for students, closely followed by Weatherspoons (35%), the student union (23%) and gigs (17%). A surprising 19% more girls (25%) than guys (21%) voted that having a hangover caused an occasion to be defined as going ‘out out’.

When asked how their night out could be improved, 97% of students voted for free entry (50%) and free drinks (47%). One in five (19%) voted pulling or snogging somone would make their night out even better, yet only one in twenty (4%) opted for their other half not to be present. Takeaway food on the way home was also a popular choice for 35% of students.

In line with the start of a new term and a fresh new student loan payment, January offers the opportunity to spare the spend whilst leading a supercharged social life. Pro Plus offers advice on how students can budget smart to Live Like A Pro throughout 2018:

Carry Cash – Only take cash on a night out and leave the bank card at home. An oldie, but a goodie, this tip will help you limit the amount you spend on a night out. It will also help you to budget throughout the night, ensuring to always save for the cab on the way home.

Ditch The Pricey Dates – Wining and dining can quickly eat away at your student bank balance. Instead of a costly meal out, why not opt for a quirky yet just as impressive alternative date idea. For students by the coast, a beach BBQ could seal the deal or, for city students, why not demonstrate your style by treating your love interest to a trip to a local vintage or food market.

Switch Up Your Caffeine Kick – Swap your pricey coffee caffeine fix for Pro Plus. Pro Plus is significantly cheaper than a calorie laden latte from the usual coffee houses of the high street, yet offers the caffeine equivalent to a strong cup of coffee, helping you to stay alert and focused and ready to boss beer pong – Like A Pro.

Embrace A Discount – Get yourself a discount card to maximise any student savings going. Big chain retailers are overflowing with savings to be had, especially student highstreet favourites such as Topshop and Topman. Another tip is to renew your rail and NUS cards in your final year, as both are valid for three years, allowing for two additional years of shopping and traveling.

Twilight Food Shop – Going food shopping in the evenings can help you pick up some delicious discounts. With supermarkets reducing the price of soon-to-be out of date food around 6pm, you could be dining on awesome steak and chips for the same price as a ready meal.

Furnish For Free – Freecycling is a students best friend for those wanting to add their own personal touch to their pad. There are many sites – Facebook, eBay and Gumtree – where you’ll find plenty of perfectly good furniture and appliances up for grabs, either for free or at low cost.

Floatation therapy is a therapeutic practice involving custom designed floatation cabins filled with 10″ of water and over 1300 pounds of dissolved medical grade Epsom Salt, a higher concentration than the Dead Sea.

Floaters are free from external stimuli such as sight, sound, touch, temperature, and the force of gravity as they float weightless and effortlessly in water calibrated to match the skin’s temperature (F 93.5).

Floating allows you to conserve and redirect your natural energy, induce relaxation and heal your body, mind, and soul. The average person can reach a meditative state in just 15 minutes.. Doctors and pro-athletes have known about the incredible benefits of magnesium sulfate for years but technological advances have now made the experience far better for muscle recovery, pain relief and even enhanced sleep management. A 90-minute float session can feel like 6 to 8 hours of deep sleep.. The human body is composed of 60 percent water, of which the lungs are 90 percent water, brain is 70 percent, and blood is more than 80 percent water. It only seems logical that connecting mind and body through mediation in water containing vital minerals that mimics body temperature would maximize the body’s healing and mental focus.

Healing Waters utilizes a sophisticated UV Sanitation Filter to clean and sanitize each cabin between spa-goers. An advanced reverse osmosis filtration system removes impurities from the water and ensures that every experience is not only Eco-friendly but rejuvenating for your skin. The state-of-the-art filtration systems have an ultra-fine, one-micron filter and are FDA compliant for drinking water (Class 1 Filtration). For comparison, standard pool and spa filters are 20-30 microns. The filter systems also include the Solar Eclipse Ozone, and Evolution Flow Control System for complete sanitization.

Consciously.org are the perfect fit for someone looking to transform in a complete way starting in the new year.

At Consciously we educate people in holistic health and show them how to make true and permanent change for the better. We have various programs from nutrition to meditation and each walks you through everything you need to know to be successful in your transformation. Our approach is multi fold. We walk each person through a day to day program and show them how to operate for best results. We then educate them with new classes every week to help them get a broader perspective on why we are having them do what they are doing. Lastly we bring people together to give them a support system as they make their transformation.

In holistic health, we approach life from multiple angles:

Nutrition is paramount in setting a good and solid foundation for health in life. If you are dealing with depression or anxiety and your nutrition is horrible, it could be playing a major role due to chemical imbalances in the brain. Living the life that we are each purposed with to the fullest can’t be done if there is no general health.

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools that we can use for transformation in life. Quite often, stress and anxiety are caused simply by outlook and mental habits. We specifically target those habits and begin to change each person’s perspective. We also get to dive deeper with people and teach them about how consciousness really works.

From there, we offer Do It Yourself programs that introduce people to other ways to increase their overall health. We have Natural Remedies and Energy Healing that both offer insight into different modalities for transformation.

In the end, however, each person must take part in their own transformation. I can not do it for someone else. This is why our programs are hands on for our clients. We are not going to send them pre-made meals… because unless they learn how to cook, it won’t last.

New Year 2018 Radical Transformation Feature! Mind, Body,Spirit, Life!

Transformation begins with knowing where you are now andwhere you want to go!

I mean this in the most superficial and deep-seated ways.Because the truth is, what is within is without–what is below is above.Transformation is about aligning the mind and body so they are on parallel lifetracks.

You may know you want to attract a life partner. And you may think you have aligned your mindand body by enlisting in a dating service–a mental strategy–and updating yourwardrobe and hairstyle–a physical make over. But this is not what I mean byalignment.

Your body is an emotional template of who you are; whileyour mind manages what tensions you hold on to or release, and what convictionsof strength you choose to stand in. If your emotions, which live in the softtissues of the body, are creating tension around a partnership, while your mindis trying to connect with a potential partner, there will be a mixed messagecommunicated. In fact, you can even come off as disinterested or flippant. Thisis the same for any life goal.

To start the year onthe right foot, get really honest about the underlying beliefs related to yourgoals or resolutions. Transformation begins with knowing what the belief isthat keeps you estranged from your potential.

Physical tension is a road map to your emotional misalignment. To learn the intricacies of your lessluminescent emotional road map get really interested in areas of physical discomfortor fatigue. As you workout in the gym or sit at your computer, try to do youractivities from a place of ease. When tension creeps into your posture try torelease it through your breath and good posture. Notice what you are feeling asyou try to release your tension. Under the frustration that the tension existsat all, is a deeper, more meaningful “why” regarding the tension. Fear, anger, disappointment, hopelessness, sadness regarding a life partner (in this case), orin the process of finding a partner, may rear its ugly head. Once you areconnected to the emotion, feel into it even more intimately. What is the beliefthat you have taken on as a reaction to this emotion?

Learning the belief that negates a life goal enables you todirect your efforts toward transforming it. The process of transforming abelief is in breaking down the tension that is holding it in tact. Yourcommitment to this unraveling needs to preside over all else: mind yourphysical ease in posture, in workouts, in conversations.

Notice when your energy stops moving. When you feelresistant to do, say or feel something that would align you with your goalrealize you are reinforcing tension against creating it. Recognize your resistance.Realize your belief. Then manage your resistance by releasing misalignedtension and aligning your strength with conviction.

Transformation doesn’t happen through external strategiesalone, it requires internal resolve. Scouring shops for the perfect outfit is afun and playful way to connect your unique spirit out into the world. (A worldfull of potential partners!) But it is in scouring your inner road map–youremotional blueprint–that you will be inviting that world in.

It is a pleasure to share my views on the mind body connection with you and your readership. I hope this will be helpful to you.
BodyLogos is a strength training approach that transforms tension into strength through posture and alignment, in and out of the gym!
Sincerely, Tammy Wise

New Year’s Resolutions – the feel good way to shop in 2018

A popular new year’s resolution is to be more charitable. Life pressures and unexpected costs, however, can mean that charity donations aren’t always possible. Thankfully, there is a way to shop and donate at the same time with the Born Free – international wildlife charity – range of ‘feel good’ purchases:
All available from https://give.bornfree.org.uk/shop
COFFEE – £6.16 per 250g pack
Independent coffee roaster, Coffee Real, has joined forces with Born Free to create an exclusive Born Free coffee. This delicious espresso blend uses coffee sourced from countries in which Born Free is actively involved including India, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
WINE & PROSECCO – £7.99 per bottle / £11.25 per bottle for prosecco
Vintage Roots has a range of ‘Wild Thing’ wines and prosecco, from which a percentage of profits goes towards Born Free’s work. Choose from their Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot or Rosé, or their Prosecco.
TRAVEL ADAPTOR – £12
Jet-setters can plug in their gadgets and support Born Free at the same time with the charity’s new travel adaptor that works in over 150 countries.
CANVAS SHOPPER – £11
The Born Free canvas shopper is the perfect solution for eco-friendly and money-savvy shoppers to save paying the 5p plastic carrier charge.
SOFT SHELL OUTERWEAR JACKET – £43
If getting outdoors more is on the agenda for 2018, why not keep warm, dry and stylish with Born Free’s Soft Shell Jacket for men and women.
VIRGINIA MCKENNA ROSE – £13.95 per bear root plant (pot grown plant also available)
For those thinking of getting green-fingered in the new year Harkness Roses offers a stunning rose named after Virginia McKenna, profits from which go to Born Free.
ANIMAL ADOPTION – £2.50PM / £30
With over 18 species to choose from, or the option to purchase a gift voucher, supporters receive a unique adoption pack including a cuddly toy, glossy photo, a personalised adoption certificate, a copy of the animal’s story, a Born Free window sticker and folder, and two copies of Born Free’s Adopt! magazine throughout the year.

What to do with the ghost of Christmas Present?

Have you received an unwanted present? What do you do now?

If you can’t ask the present giver for the receipt, or you don’t know where the item was bought and there is no way of returning the item you got for Christmas, what can you do with it?

Four money bloggers take a look at what you could do:

· Helen Dewdney The Complaining Cow and author of How to Complain: The Essential Consumer Guide

· Faith Archer of Much More with Less

· Emily Rowley of A Thrifty Fox

· Hollie Gregersen of Thrifty Mum

1) Regift – the bloggers say first, of course! But Helen adds make a note of who gave it to you, so you don’t give it back. Keep them with the bargains that you buy throughout the year as gifts for various people and events!

2) Recycle – (e.g. clothes bank) they also suggest.

3) Donate to charity – Helen likes to donate unwanted items and says there’s more than the obvious charity shop. Towels, duvets and bed linen can be donated to a homeless charity or pet rescue (many places won’t take duvets but pet rescues will take for making into dog beds!) Look at Freecycle too. There are 5,314 groups with 9,140,031 members around the world, and local to you. Run by volunteers it enables people to donate to local people who will give your item a loving home and keep things out of landfill as people find different uses for similar items!

4) Fundraisers – Donate for a tombola or raffle, such as your child’s school, Helen adds. All PTAs welcome good raffle prizes! If there are lots of small gifts suitable for children, consider keeping them for next year and making up a box for next year’s shoebox appeal.[1]

5) Foodbanks – If not Christmassy and has a good “eat by” date on it, give to your local foodbank. Many are grateful for toiletries too, Helen adds.

6) Upcycle – Faith suggests using hampers as very useful storage boxes or bins, as examples.

7) Sell – Faith also recommends selling on auction sites or car boot as the item is, or upcycled to make more money! And to sell free of charges, try a garage sale, Facebook Marketplace/local groups or Gumtree.

8) Rent – Faith adds that renting is growing in popularity. Some people are now hiring out a range of things, such as baby items, power tools and clothes. Look into doing it yourself or join in with existing budding entrepreneurs! You can sell unwanted gift cards on the Zeek website which is a marketplace website/app where gift cards can be bought and sold. Sellers can set their own price and the bigger the discount, the faster the voucher sells.

9) Council – Emma advises checking with your local council social services department, as many will redistribute toys to a toy library or homeware to a family in need.

10) Swap or swish – These are great, enthuses Hollie! This is where you can take good condition clothes and jewellery and swap. Organise an event yourself or search online to find a local one. Multi Coloured Swap Shop is back for adults!

Another idea: Perhaps this year is the year that you have a chat with people about reducing the present buying next time?!

Eye know: New Year changes to your health habits could help save your sight

Fight for Sight, the UK’s leading eye research charity, has some top tips for keeping your eyes healthy. That’s right, as part of your New Year fitness regime (and who doesn’t make plans to have one of those?) you can do things to keep your eyes healthy. Given that sight is the sense people fear losing the most, and that many people don’t realise you can actively look after your sight, it makes sense to have a look at Fight for Sight’s top tips.

Have regular check-ups
Have your eyes tested every two years, even if your vision seems fine. An eye test can also spot some symptoms of illnesses not related to your sight. Regular check-ups are vital even if you have no symptoms and eye tests should be a part of everyone’s normal healthcare routine.

Wear sunglasses
Protect your eyes – even in winter – when it’s sunny or when in high glare areas such as near snow or water. The CE or BS EN 1836:2005 marks indicate that sunglasses provide a safe level of protection from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. Ongoing UV exposure can increase your risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration.

Keep fit and healthy
Being fit and well can actually help your eyes stay healthy. Maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure can help with eye health.

Find out your family eye health history
Talk to your relatives about your family eye health history. Some eye conditions have genetic links which increase your risk of developing them. Share this information with your optometrist or eye health professional.

Take care of your contact lenses
If you wear contacts, look after them properly. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands before touching your contact lenses or your eyes. Your lenses and their case should only ever be cleaned with the lens solution recommended by your optometrist. Always follow the instructions given to you by your optometrist or the lens manufacturer.

Stop smoking
Smoking is harmful to your eyes and can increase the risk of sight loss. Current smokers are 2 – 4 times more at risk of developing macular degeneration than people who have never smoked.

Protect your eyes
Don’t look directly at the sun. The ultraviolet light from the sun is powerful and the delicate parts of your eyes can be damaged by the sun much more quickly. Sunlight can flood your retinas, overstimulating the rods and cones that sense light and cause them to release chemicals that can damage the retinas.

Wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from injury if you work with hazardous or airborne materials. This applies at home too, if you’re doing DIY or gardening.

Eat well
Make sure your diet includes nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamins C and E. These may help to prevent or delay age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Recommended foods for general good health include green leafy vegetables, oily fish such as salmon and citrus fruits.

Avoid recreational drugs
There is evidence to suggest that some recreational drugs can cause sight loss – particularly alkyl nitrites, also known as poppers.

New Year’s Fairy

The Christmas fairy might be about to be tucked away in a box for another year, but an unusual plant known as ‘fairy herb’ may hold the key to New Year’s weight loss success.
‘Fairy herb’ may sound like a mythical plant from a Harry Potter novel, but it’s actually another name for a plant called jiaogulan, which grows in parts of Asia. Until recently it was used primarily in mountainous regions of southern China and northern Vietnam where it is described as the “immortality herb”, because people within the Guizhou Province, where jiaogulan herbal teas are consumed regularly, are said to have a history of unusual longevity.
Scientists have discovered there is more than myth and legend to the benefits of the herb however, with studies showing it can help with everything from diabetes1,2 to osteoarthritis3.
Perhaps most relevant for those who have overdone it during the festive period is research showing that jiaogulan extracts could help with weight loss4,5,6. One of the published studies6 is based on a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial. These kind of studies are well respected and this one involved 74 men and women taking a jiaogulan extract over a 12 week period.
At the end of the trial, those using the jiaogulan extracts were found to have significantly (compared to the placebo group) decreased their total abdominal fat area, losing on average nearly 21cm2 fat from around their bellies. Overall body weight, body fat mass, percent body fat, and BMI were also all significantly reduced.

How to try fairy herb
You no longer have to head to the mountains of China to find fairy herb, as in the last few months jiaogulan products have begun to appear on European shelves.
Herbal tea experts, Natur Boutique, have just launched one of the first jiaogulan teas to be available in the UK. The herb produces a delicious drink with a slightly bittersweet taste, and Natur Boutique’s drink uses just one pure ingredient and has no additives or flavourings, which gives it an added purity of flavour.
For more details or to buy visit www.naturboutique.co.uk, Amazon or ask at your local health store.

PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT use if pregnant, breast feeding or suffering from a medical condition/on medication.
As jiaogulan has been linked to boosting the immune system it may not be suitable for those with auto-immune diseases.

Bashful Brits reluctant to admit they hate their Christmas gifts – but are busy planning for 2018

· Over a third received at least one gift they didn’t want, but only 7% returned or exchanged them

· One-third say they will buy next year’s Christmas cards or wrapping paper in this year’s sales

· One in seven will start saving towards Christmas 2018 in January

More than one in three Brits received at least one Christmas gift they didn’t like but three quarters (76%) say that they would never tell the person who gave it to them, according to new research from Halifax. Scots are the most reluctant to speak up with 82% saying they wouldn’t let on, but one third (33%) of those in North East England would say something. The over 55s are also more likely to hold their tongue (84%) than 18-34 year olds (64%).

And only one in fifteen (7%) Brits return or exchange Christmas presents they didn’t want with almost a third (31%) preferring to store them, 28% gifting them to a charity shop or jumble sale and 23% re-gifting to someone else. Embarrassingly, one in seven (15%) have actually been re-gifted a present from the person they originally gave it to.

Savvy spenders take advantage of the sales

Meanwhile, savvy Brits are looking to take advantage of this year’s sales expecting to spend an average of £91.83 in the post-Christmas sales, with men splashing the cash at £106.73 and women following at £77.63. Across the UK, respondents in London expect to spend the most (£172.76) and those in Northern Ireland the least (£47).

When it comes to the sales, many are also taking the opportunity to prepare for Christmas 2018. More than one-third (36%) say they will buy next year’s Christmas cards in this year’s sales, with a third (33%) looking to pick up discount wrapping paper and almost a third (32%) even picking up presents to put under the tree in 2018. And with the growth of Christmas

jumper days in workplaces all over the country, one in seven (15%) will buy a Christmas jumper now for next year, with more than a quarter of 18-34s (28%) leading the way. 27% of those in the North East said they’d buy a Christmas jumper now for next year, but only 8% of Scots and 9% in the East Midlands said the same.

Saving for Christmas 2018….

And it not just buying for 2018 that’s occupying our minds at this time of year, with one in seven (15%) planning to start saving towards next Christmas in January. This rises to one in five (20%) in Wales, but drops to fewer than one in ten (9%) in Yorkshire and the Humber who plan to start saving in January. However, across the whole year, 56% from Yorkshire and Humber will be or have already started saving for Christmas 2018 compared to 48% in the East Midlands, 50% in Wales and 50% in Scotland. Amongst the 18-34 year olds a whopping 68% say they will save or have already started to save for Christmas 2018, compared to 55% of 35-54 year olds and only 34% of over 55s.

Jon Roberts, Managing Director of Halifax credit cards said; “It seems the traditional British reserve is still in evidence when it comes to saying we don’t like a gift, even when we’re being re-gifted something they gave in the first place. However, it is surprising that such a low percentage will look to exchange or get a refund from the retailer.

“Christmas can be an expensive time of year, so it’s encouraging that people are thinking longer-term and planning for 2018 already by saving and picking up cards, wrapping paper and even Christmas jumper bargains in the sales.”

Dr. “FRANISM”….
“Accountability is Dr. Fran’s 2018 Power-Word that beats New Year’s Resolutions!” Dr. Fran Walfish

The closure of the previous year andbeginning of the new one is generally a great place to start resolutionsbecause it is a transition point. Transitions mean letting go of the oldand beginning the new. This is the reason life changes are so difficult. Examples of this are leaving Mommy and going to preschool for the firsttime; going to college; beginning a new job; divorce; deathof a beloved pet or family member. These things, as well as New Yearresolutions, are a process, not a quick choice. They require time, commitment, and moments of anxiety. Most people fall down or fail whentheir anxiety rises.

New Year’s resolutions usually failbecause people choose their most challenging issues to overcome -their Achilles heel. These challenging issues may include dieting;ceasing to smoke, drink or use drugs; and change personality characteristicsare all issues that require ongoing guidance and support. You can’tsimply decide to change without a long-term plan and safety net in place. Most people set the resolutions at January 1st and fall off the wagonwithin the first few weeks of the New Year.

Be sure to put guidelines in placewhen making New Year’s resolutions. These guidelines include:

1. Make a reasonable plan that can befollowed without too much trauma. In other words, if you want to loseweight don’t decide to go on a juice fast for a month. You will certainlybecome too hungry, tired, and cranky and fail.

2. Plan for the “whatif’s”. Know ahead of time how you will deal with falling off thewagon. For instance, if you cheat on your diet plan how to get back on asquickly as possible. Most people feel one failure as a total loss, andthey give up.

3. Create a support system. Find atrusted someone you can talk to and get non-judgmental support from.

Determining what one wants versuswhat one needs in terms of making resolutions can become complicated. Theneeds should be pared down to physical and emotional health. For example,if a person continues to have personality clashes with co-workers or familymembers they may need to list ‘Become less critical’ on the Need Resolutionlist. Wants should include luxuries and extras that enhance life but arenot necessities. These may be a designer pair of jeans, special handbag,or perfume.

It seems thatresolutions can often be rooted in the negative (I’ll stop biting my nails,I’ll lose weight, I’ll stop procrastinating on whatever), whereas a bucket listis all about the positive: We’ll go to Costa Rica! I’ll learn to kick box! I’llframe all my art! We’ll learn to make tofu! Even if some of the things on thelist might be a bit mundane (I’ll set up a 401K! I’ll start brushing my hair!),it’s the attitude that makes a difference. These are things we’re excited to dothis year, things we’ll be so proud to have accomplished, things that will makeour lives better, more interesting, more stable, more fun.

It is best to have only one bigresolution and a couple or few smaller resolutions. Too many biggies willlikely overwhelm you. More than one little resolutions give you severalopportunities to prevail and feel successful self-esteem.

If the resolution involves anotherperson then it is important for one to be accountable for their resolutions andactions. For instance, if your resolution is to be less openly criticalof others and you find yourself still criticizing, you must own up to it and beaccountable. This is the first step toward change. However, if youresolution is self-contained, meaning it only affects you, then you areaccountable but you must be kind and forgiving to yourself. This is allabout developing a more benign Superego. Or in plain English, we mustlearn to cut ourselves slack and accept ourselves – flaws and all!

It is perfectly okay to not make NewYear’s resolutions with the caveat and understanding that you are not a loseror failure to not doing so. The fact is that most New Year’s resolutionsare not adhered to. Most people feel badly when they don’t stick to theircommitments. But, here is the truth. The unconscious mind alwaysprevails. In other words, the part of the mind that stores desires, wishes, wants, and needs that we are unaware of (without thought) always wins. That means that it doesn’t matter what you think you want, the truth ofyour underlying wants and needs will always happen. So, you may think youwant to lose weight when, in fact, what you really want is the cozy, warm, comfort of food. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF. Take a painful, open lookwithin and discover your own truth. Nurture and respect it.

If you want to try the reward systemfor sticking to your resolutions, make sure you implement rewards forshort-term positive attempts of sticking to your resolutions. Waiting toolong for a contingency doesn’t work. Give yourself daily or weekly smallrewards versus waiting until the end of the month. Do not implementnegative reinforcements or punishments. Falling off the wagon is punitiveenough. Make it a positive incentive and if you meet with disappointment giveyourself a break for being human.

My main message to readers is toacknowledge, validate, and accept ourselves – flaws and all! This is whatevery child and adult longs for.

Here are some ways to transform your life for the better:

Drink a fruit/green smoothie. A smoothie is filled with fiber. Eighty percent of serotonin is made in our intestines. Fiber is the best food for the production of serotonin. A smoothie that tastes good that you have for breakfast will make you feel good right away and for the rest of the day.
Run barefoot in snow. Even few seconds will make you smile. You are allowed to scream.
No snow? Pour some very cold water into a bucket and step in it for a few seconds. Not at home? Open the faucet with cold water and keep your hands under water for a few seconds. Splash some of that water on your face. You will feel refreshed and energized.
Go out into the sunlight. Being out in the sun has been known for thousands of years to make us feel better.
Turn on your favorite music and dance. Dance as silly as you can. Move those hips, shake those shoulders. The release of endorphins will bring a smile to your face in no time.
Sing or hum a tune.
Look at stars.
Write a love note.
Look at yourself in the mirror and make silly faces.
Take few deep breaths, then hold your breath for 10 seconds and sigh out.
Diffuse Bergamot essential oil or put a few drops on your hands.
Walk in the wilderness. Being in the wilderness is healing for both the body and the soul.
Light a candle and stare at the flame. Don’t think about anything else, just watch the flame dance.
Give someone you love a big long hug.

The Trend towards Transformational Travel in 2018

‘Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.’ Gustave Flaubert.

Travel sophisticates have long known the value of spending on ‘experience over things’ but if 2017 was the year of responsible or sustainable tourism, 2018 will be taking it one step as wanderlusters seek to add some truly transformational travel experiences to their travel bragging portfolio.

Forget a cleansing yoga retreat or a week long stay in an eco-lodge. While these holiday experiences may provide the relaxation, there’s definitely something missing. Interaction with the locals and giving something back. Transformational travel begs the somewhat zen question; “If a traveller visits a place but avoids the locals and culture, have they travelled there at all?”

Julian Carnall, co-founder of adventure travel company Large Minority has been promoting transformational travel experiences in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Philippines and The Amazon since 2008 and has first hand experience that confirms, once you’ve involved yourself with travel experiences that leave a lasting impression on you, you’re hooked.

“Adventure travel has this image of a lone explorer battling the wilderness; just them, nerves of steel and their North Face gear. We’re one of a growing number of responsible adventure travel companies who are shifting gears in the space.”

And indeed shifting gears is something participants in Large Minority’s Lanka and Cambo Challenges will get very used to indeed. Both trips welcome teams of one or two from all over the globe to participate in twice yearly adventures across Sri Lanka and Cambodia, driving both countries popular transport – the tuk tuk. Travel fans who prefer their adventure water-based, should consider their Philippines Sailing Challenge (touted as ‘beautiful sailing chaos on the high seas for non-sailors’) or the most recent addition to it’s stable, The Amazon Challenge, which takes participants through jungle and down the mighty river on a variety of traditional watercraft.

Carnall is keen to point out that while there is a competitive element to each of the trips, they definitely aren’t races. Rather, points are accrued by participants tested by daily challenges designed to get them out of their comfort zones, bonding with the other teams and most importantly interacting with the locals and impacting positively on local economies.

“As all our trips are designed to directly benefit the communities in which they take place, Challengers can be assured of a lot of interaction with communities and culture. Between that and the incredible wildlife they’ll encounter along the way, a Large Minority trip truly is a life changing experience. What could possibly be more rewarding than switching off, dropping out and getting down and (quite often) very dirty and coming home with twenty or thirty new friends?”

Large Minority’s adventure challenges are suitable for all ages and fitness levels, with a portion of all proceeds going to charities on the ground. Prices start at USD1554 per person for a team of three and include transport, accommodation (in some cases quite luxurious), breakfast and dinners, a crack team of support professionals and insurance. Early bird discounts are available up to 90 days prior to trip dates.

21-29 April 2018

Philippines Challenge – Twice a year (April & November) responsible travel company, Large Minority hosts the Philippines Sailing Challenge. Touted as ‘beautiful sailing chaos on the high seas for non-sailors’ this nine-day adventure voyage has participants nagivating the turquoise oceans and pristine, uninhabited islands around Boracay in a locally skippered ‘paraw’ tri-maran. The perfect introduction to adventure travel, teams of two or three will learn to man these local sailing vessels and undertake daily challenges to have them interacting with the locals and finding hidden gems.

From USD $1,840 per person (based on a team of 3) Flights not included.

20-29 April 2018

Lanka Challenge – a ten day, 1000km tuk tuk challenge around either the south or north of Sri Lanka which sees teams from all over the world not only negotiate the ‘challenges’ of Sri Lankan roads but also complete tasks that have them interacting with the locals and getting out of their comfort zones. Points are awarded for challenges met, NOT the first to the finish line. Camaraderie is the name of the game here and teams often stop to help each other, or even swap transports for a day to get to know their fellow challengers. Participants are encouraged to ‘pimp’ their tuk tuks, wear fancy dress and bring their favourite music which they can pump from a specially adapted boom box in their unique transport.

The Challenge takes teams through some of the most scenic and sometimes remote areas of Sri Lanka and participants can expect to encounter a world of welcoming locals, beautiful beaches, tonnes of wildlife – including wild elephants, tea plantations, mountains and cities. While it’s not for the faint of heart, it is achievable for all fitness levels. Plus, there is a crack logistics team who are never more than 10 minutes away from each tuk tuk at any time. Breakdowns are usually back on the road in no time.

USD $1,740 per person (team of 3) Flights not included.

16-23 March 2018

Amazon Challenge – Traversing through jungle and river from the corner of the Colombian Amazon to Peru and Brazil, this is an 8 day river adventure through the least accessed parts of the Amazon jungle. Whether taking part in the indigenous Olympics, kayaking, piranha fishing, night trekking or wildlife watching, participants in the Amazon Challenge will return home with an experience of a lifetime. Teams of two will travel by dugout canoes, kayaks, and Amazonian long boats and will bed down each night in a variety of exceptional jungle accommodation.

Team of 2: USD $2,000 per person (Flights not included)

It’s worth noting that as of Jan 2018, Large Minority will be operating as both an adventure travel event organiser and also travel experts developing one-off itineraries informed by the challenge routes. To make an enquiry visit www.largeminority.travel

In 2015 I weighed 150 kilograms (330 pounds) and I was at a point in my life where I had tried ALL the diets, and nothing was working in the long term. I was exhausted, I spent so much of my time restricting myself and then binging.

From my first diet at age 4, I have lost and regained in excess of 500 kilograms in my life and I was just DONE. Done with following someone else’s rules, done with being told what I could and couldn’t eat and when and how much. I was simply at a point where I would rather live who I was forever, trapped in this super obese body, then keep trying to live as a shadow of someone else – looking externally for some authority to tell me what to do.

I knew their had to be another way, and so I set out in search of that. I enrolled in programs about mindset, and I DID the work. I started listening to my body and being kind to myself and adding good things in rather than cutting things out. I broke free from the deprivation / binge cycle and I forged a new path for myself.

Along the way I found some amazing mentors and programs and support. But none of them were ‘exactly’ what I needed. So I took what I needed from each thing and created my own way of doing things. In the process I have released over 70 kilograms (150 pounds) so far.

Now I help others who were in a similar position to where I was do the same, to work out what works for them. Every person is an individual and what works for one may not work for another. But what works for everyone is having the support and accountability of having a mentor in your corner. As a mentor I want what is best for my clients, but I am also completely detached from their ‘story’ and so I help to shine a light on blind spots, and together we create the way forward – so that my clients can finally be free of emotional eating and instead live they truly love.

The need to overeat becomes irrelevant when you realise what you DO want and that you won’t get it by eating, because you can never get enough of what you don’t really want.

ADVICE ON PLANNING AND DESIGNING LUXURIOUS HOME GYMS AND SPAS

Managing Director of motive8, Nick Sadler, explains the key considerations when designing home spa facilities for your new build or renovation project.

The ideal starting point for creating a home spa facility is having a blank canvas. But, regardless of what stage the build phase it is at, the first thing to consider is the needs of the end user. We need you to tell us why you want a home spa or gym and who is going to be using it. Will it just be adults? Or will your children have access to it? If so, how old are they? Who is going to use your new space will ultimately define what it becomes.

The initial meeting usually takes place at your home; we will have a chat so that we can get a real idea of what you are looking for and go over some plans. If you have older children wanting to use the facilities, it’s best if they are included in this initial meeting, as ultimately the space needs to suit all of the users. Creating private facilities are our favourite type of projects because everyone has completely different ideas about how they want it to look and what they want to get out of it. Our job is to then take that vision, translate it, add to it and produce a solution that fits the brief for every user and hopefully one that exceeds your expectations.

If ‘Keeping up with the Joneses is important to you, then there are a few key trends emerging. Infrared saunas are a great new product, for example. Compared to traditional Finnish saunas, they heat up very quickly making them ideal for a home environment. They also have great respiratory benefits and help with post-workout recovery/de-stressing. Ice fountains, snow rooms and salt rooms are also becoming increasingly popular in order to achieve an all-encompassing wellbeing experience at home.

Swimming has become a really popular form of exercise again and there are numerous options available. If you don’t have the space for a full length 20-25m pool to get your lengths in, then you can consider products like a swimming treadmill or an endless pool.

Do you even want to swim in your pool? Sounds daft but some people like them purely for aesthetic effect or to relax in rather than exercise. Some people have installed them simply to add value before they sell their home and never even use them themselves!

Aside from it looking aesthetically pleasing, there are a number of legal and safety implications that need to be considered. When designing pool systems, we need to make sure your system meets various standards, like those detailed within the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG).

You also always need to consider the worst-case scenario. For example, if you are looking to install any kind of water feature and have small children, their safety is paramount so we may look to install a hard pool cover instead of a generic soft one. If you are having a sauna, we will ensure the correct shut off is installed or timed door locks are used to avoid children from entering unsupervised by accident. As a designer, we must always have health and safety at the forefront of our minds when helping you make a decision, particularly because in a home gym scenario the facilities will be used unsupervised.

As consultants, we rarely see home spas installed without some form of gym or exercise room alongside it. Our experts have designed hundreds of bespoke gyms. We can recommend specific gym equipment based on your goals, and make sure the layout will work within your home. You’d be surprised what you can fit into a relatively small space, with keys items such as folding treadmills and cable machines that allow you to perform hundreds of exercises in a comparatively small footprint. We can also accommodate the need for the gym space to be dual purpose – for example sharing the area with a home office.

We aim to be as transparent as possible every step of the way, explaining the pros and cons of all the various options, advising you on alternative or better solutions and making sure you are fully up to speed with what we are proposing. There is nothing worse than getting half way through the project and finding out that you are feeling uncomfortable with where the concept is heading.

With all projects, there are certain considerations that must be taken into account. If you are adding a new building in your back garden or extending your home in any way to make space for the facilities, you may need to apply to your local council for planning consent.

Whatever your requirements, at motive8 we have the knowledge and private gym design experience to craft your perfect home gym. Contact us on 0800 028 0198 or info@m8group.co.uk for a free consultation.

Searching for God in the Garbage about overcoming eating disorders by feeding your soul. Current wisdom is to learn to listen to our bodies, but my book’s main thesis is that we also need to learn to listen to our souls.

When office snacks are available, for instance, people can test if they are actually physially hungry by asking themselves if they would want to eat an apple if it was available. If they wouldn’t, then it is likely their souls that are hungry, not their bodies.

This awareness helps people to fill their souls in any number of infinite ways then instead: by listening to music, going outside for a nature break, doing a kindness for someone, etc.

This is a radically new, but oh so basic perspective, that can significantly help people with food addictions to overcome them and live much more joyfully.

ABC Nutrition by Bess

Best tips for 2018:

1) Don’t pick at food as you are serving or clearing the kitchen table. Those bites here and there add up and can sabotage weight loss and energy levels.

2) I often have clients who splurge and eat something that is they know is not good for them. They then feel guilty and report they didnt even enjoy the food so much. My advice, if you splurge, make sure you really love that food. And then enjoy it and dont feel guilty!

3) Supplements make a huge difference. I recommend people get nutrient tested by a knowledgeable health provider and supplement their healthy diet with supplements for their specific needs.

4) Drink water! People think its only about what they are eating. It’s also about hydration. Get rid of sodas and juices. If you want juice, get a decent blender and make a juice with water or coconut water, some fruit, even some vegetables and seeds,

5) If it comes in a package, it’s processed. Limit refined foods and sugar. It will make a huge difference in your energy, sleep quality and weight.

New Book “Rules of Engagement: Making Connections Last” Helps Women Build Lasting Relationships

Fort Worth, TX (NewMediaWire) July 22, 2013 – “Rules of Engagement: Making Connections Last” by master networker Froswa Booker-Drew shares the author’s experience of building lasting personal and professional relationships with others. In this recently released book by Austin Brothers Publishing, Booker-Drew explores how many businesswomen and mothers don’t believe they have the time or energy to find and develop new relationships. “Rules of Engagement: Making Connections Last” is a workbook for women who understand the value of relating to others, both professionally and personally.

Helping women develop the kind of relationships that pay valuable dividends to everyone involved is the goal of Booker-Drew. Her powerful workbook will not only equip readers with the information they need, but the workbook format will walk them through the exercises to make it a reality.

Building on her experience of leading groups of women through journeys of self-discovery and growth, Booker-Drew shares insights into how to make more effective use of their time and effort in order to assemble a stronger network of people around them. She writes, “As women, we spend so much time helping others create their stories that we do not take time to reflect on our own stories. We keep moving and moving, failing to see the lessons learned that resulted in our growth. We so often focus on the hurt, that we seldom witness the amount of healing. Those elements are all a part of reflecting and revisiting the story of our lives.”

Booker-Drew continues, “There are no right or wrong answers. But this workbook offers an opportunity to take an inventory of where you have been, where you want to go, and evaluate the gaps that exist between the two. In doing so, you will be more authentic and create more relationships that are transparent and transformational.”

Froswa Booker-Drew has built a diverse network of individuals and organizations around the world and has more than 20 years of experience in leadership development, training, nonprofit management, education, and social services. She currently is employed by an international nonprofit and participated in the documentary, “Friendly Captivity,” a film that followed a cast of seven women from Dallas to India in 2008. Because of this experience, she has dedicated much of her spare time to identifying ways to support organizations that address vulnerable and marginalized youth.
