BUCCANEERS PRESIDENT’S SELECTION 21 EXILES 7
THE EXILES recent grip on the James Moran Exiles Perpetual Cup was broken when the President’s Selection prevailed 21-7 in a rain-lashed encounter at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on a bitingly cold St. Stephen’s Day. The foul weather militated against flowing rugby and also impacted on the attendance for this seasonal favourite.
Nevertheless, the two sides gave it their all and the President’s men proved full value for their savoured victory. They outscored the holders by three tries to one and, unusually, not only were all four tries converted, but they were each converted by the relevant try-scorer! Ruairi Byrne, Ger Fallon and Glen Costello were the try-scorers for the winners with David Fagan replying for the holders, whose skipper Liam Doran travelled all the way from Perth in Australia.
Keith Grehan is really on a roll at present! The long-term stalwart (despite his youth) is firmly established now in the Seconds XV and he recently made his Senior debut as part of the Connacht Senior Cup winning Buccs team earlier this month. He follows that by captaining the President’s Selection and he was duly presented with the refurbished trophy by Cian Moran at the traditional after-match gathering in The Bounty. The even longer serving Craig Milling was presented with the ‘Man of the Match’ jersey by Mrs. Kay Moran.
Buccaneers President’s Selection:- Keith Grehan (captain), Sean Byrne, Sean Flynn, Brian Campbell, Ger Fallon, Glen Costello, Ruairi Byrne and Craig Milling.
Exiles Selection:- Liam Doran (captain), David Egan, Paul Byrne, John Lopez, Niall Flynn, Robert Reid, David Fagan and Leo Didebashvili.
REFEREE:- Diarmuid Morrissey (Connacht).
