Castlebar Ladies began the defence of their Connacht League title on a very foggy pitch against NUIG at Dangan, Galway on today. The fog didn’t lift until well into the second half but this didn’t impact on the fantastic display of rugby from both sides. It was a definite ‘game of two halves’ as Castlebar were very lucky to hold on and win by 5 points.
After a Castlebar kick off it was the visitors who settled into the game first and held NUIG in their own half for 15 minutes. The Galway girls went through multiple phases but failed to get through the brick wall that was the Castlebar defence. Castlebar’s defensive efforts were rewarded with a turnover ball, and an overlap spotted by scrum half Becky Gavin resulted in a try in the corner for winger Emma Doyle. From the restart Castlebar took up from where they left off and this time Doyle went one better and scored her second try under the posts making the conversion easier for out-half Darwyn O’Halloran. This spurred the home side into action as they made their way into Castlebar territory and were unlucky not to come away with a try after being awarded a penalty on the 5 metre line. A let off for the Castlebar girls as they made their way back up the pitch, this time full back Jacinta Walsh touched down for a try with Becky Gavin converting on the half time whistle leaving the score 19-0 in favour of the visitors…… see more at :- https://www.facebook.com/pages/Castlebar-Ladies-Rugby-Team/348589365228114?fref=ts
