The women’s interpro series kicked off yesterday and saw Connacht on the wrong side of a 15-8 result v Leinster in Galway. NUIG is well represented in the interpro frame this winter by four. Edel McMahon returns to the side of the scrum having plied her defensive talents last year to good effect. Limerick ex-pat Rita Breen, an interprovincial debutante this season, has gone from strength to strength in both preseason fixtures thus far mixing a solid work ethic in the close quarter exchanges with peak fitness on open ground. Wing-fullback Rhona Julian offers utility cover out wide, not so much as a final line of defence but an Apocalyptic assassin Hellbent on shattering opposition bones and sending wouldbe tryscorers limping off to the netherworld. Recent graduate Heather Cary, part of Connacht’s interpro furniture these days, rounds out the foursome as another loose forward. The Canadian-born Galwegian chalks up her sixth campaign in a green jersey.
