Carrick Minis (6 yrs to 11yrs – Boys & Girls)

On Saturday, 28th of January, Carrick Mini Rugby hosted their first 2017 home blitz against Creggs RFC. Our thanks to the U10 coaches Harry, Niall and John who coordinated the blitz and to the parents of the U10 players who supported the event managing the car parks and providing the post blitz food and beverages in the IWCA facilities.

U 8s. The u8’s rugby team took on Creggs on Saturday morning and had a fantastic competition.  The raw talent and youthful enthusiasm in the u8’s is utterly infectious and the energy generated by the Carrick team was well reflected in the lads from Creggs.  Watching the game it is clear from the healthy numbers playing and understanding the game that the future of the game is in good health.  One Creggs lad was quoted as saying “I can’t wait to come back”. A great day and a great bunch of lads.

U9s. Another outstanding performance by the Under 9s who took on a strong Creggs team. While the team started slowly in chilly conditions, they soon spiced things up with a scintillating mix of red hot rucking, tenacious tackling, fluid passing movements and line breaks that would put the All Blacks to the sword. Well done to all.

U10 team played a very strong Creggs team today. After a slow start in the first half Carrick were much improved in the second half. The team put in a great effort to get back into the game, but unfortunately time was against them as they tried to draw level at the end of the game.

U11. The Carrick U11’s turned out in force to take on a determined Creggs team noted for their rucking and mauling ability. Proud parents from both sides were provided with over an hour of entertaining rugby with both teams mixing their play to gain every advantage over their opponents. Well done to all players for an excellent display of skill, passion and above all sportsmanship.
U12 team played against a strong Creggs team today, however a strong Carrick team never gave up and took on Creggs at every encounter. Every member of the squad played well today with a good few outstanding performances. We are very proud of the U12’s display today with every player showing great commitment and improvement. However at U12 level we need the full squad at training to work on our set plays. Well done all!!!!!

If your child doesn’t play rugby yet and you would like your child to be part of a great team and club, then join us on Saturday mornings at Carrick RFC at 09:45am.  Our players are all active, tough and disciplined players who hopefully have fun, whilst learning how to play and enjoy a popular, universal sport.  For more information, please call or text Aidan on 086 3867960 or you can email us on minicrfc@hotmail.com.

Carrick Youths

Carrick U 14

Carrick-on-Shannon U 14’s show true grit in their 29- 17 win over Loughrea.
Carrick hosted the Galway side in their penultimate game of the 2016/17 League.
Loughrea opened proceedings with an unconverted try which didn’t help Carrick’s confidence who were depleted by a viral infection which left them without 4 of their regular panel.
Carrick replied with a splendid Kyle McCrann try converted by the ever consistent Mark Lenehan. Loughrea replied with their own try but didn’t convert the score.
Clearly Loughrea were intent on taking Carrick’s scalp, fielding a big,  physical team.
However, Carrick dug deep and showed discipline & character as the game progressed with tries by Oisin Curley, Niall Crowe & Hedd Morgan.
Mark Lenehan converted 3 out of 4 and slotted over a penalty.
A most enjoyable game which highlighted the true potential of this Carrick side.

U.15 Connacht ‘A’ League, Carrick-on-Shannon v Claremorris

Carrick U.15s entertained the Connacht ‘A’ League Leaders Claremorris at Keenaghan last Saturday.

In one of the best games of rugby seen in Carrick in a long time this match had everything, great runs, crunching tackles between two teams that went out to play open running rugby.

Carrick conceded an early penalty but bounced back with a wonderfully timed intercept try by Ruairi King under the posts.

Claremorris responded and after ten minutes of sustained pressure scored a try and then shortly before half time went over the line again leaving the half time score 17-7.

Killian McAuley then scored a try for Carrick, converted by Eoin McLoughlin from way out on the right touch line which left the score at 17-14 but they were to rue allowing Claremorris in for another unconverted try which left the score 22-14.

Chasing the match, Carrick’s No. 9 Eoghan Matthews made a wonderful sniping run from a scrum and then grubber kicked the ball for a chase to the line as Claremorris were caught wrong footed. In the ensuing chase Matthews was tackled without the ball conceding a penalty  which McLoughlin converted.

Carrick continued to press but were unable to get over the line one more time and in the end Claremorris won out by a score line of 22-17.

Great credit has to be given to the Carrick team with Sean Nee, Jack Murphy, Adam Langan, Ashley Maziya, Cian Singleton and Josh Young making great runs and tackling like demons. The players man of the match went to Josh Young.
